Phil Wood Bottom Brackets

Consist of a cartridge and 2 mounting rings.

What makes Phil Wood Bottom Brackets so great?

• 17 mm Proprietary Heat-Treated Stainless Steel spindle for maximum durability & minimum flex
• Provided with Phil sealed cartridge bearings in models for both 68 and 73 mm BB shells
• Unique cupped flats for crank arm retention with a shell designed to seal out contamination
• Wide bearing separation provides maximum spindle rigidity with cups providing 5 mm of added adjustment
• A bazillion different lengths and offsets to match virtually any frame and crankset combination. Plus the ability to shift the bottom bracket left or right by up to 5 mm, allowing optimum chainlines.

• Basic Phil Wood information
• All cartridges are compatible with all cups and tools.
• All Phil Wood BB cups require use of the Phil Wood BB cup installation tool.
• The British and Italian anodized alloy cups are compatible with aluminum and titanium BB shells.
• 68 mm Cartridges will have approximately 2.5 mm of the rings extending from both sides of a 68 mm shell. The 68 mm cartridge in a 73 mm shell will allow the rings to be flush with the shell. Because of this, we stock the 68 mm cartridges in many sizes. We don't stock the 73 mm cartridges, but can get them in 2 to 3 weeks time.
• Phil Wood cups should be installed with supplied thread locking compound or Blue Loctite 242 when used in steel, aluminum, and titanium bottom bracket shells

Phil cartridges can also be had with the same housings and titanium spindles. These are available upto 123 mm length by special order. They are approximately 60 gm lighter than the stainless ones above. Call us for pricing and availability info.

The Magnium - Titanium versions of Phil bottom brackets are also available by special order. The housing is Magnesium/Aluminum/Titanium and the spindle is titanium. They are available up to 130 mm in many of the same lengths as the Stainless Steel versions, but weigh approximately 130 gm less. Please call or email if you would like to discuss one of these.

Tools for Phil Wood Bottom Brackets

The diameter and notch pattern on the Phil Wood mounting rings are not the same as any other BB mounting system. (That's not because they choose to be different...Phil was the first to use this type of mounting, other makers of cartrdige bbs chose to create their own proprietary tooling.)

So you will need a Phil Wood tool. Sold individually, but work better if used in pairs, especially on French/Italian threaded bottom brackets.

Old-style Cup-and-Cone Bottom Bracket Parts

Cartridge bottom brackets are really superior technology, but for some older bikes, suitable cartridge bottom brackets may not be available. We stock the necessary parts for many older bicycles.

The B on the end of the Size Codes means Bolt. The spindle has threaded holes on each end to take bolts. Some older spindles had threaded ends that took nuts. Both styles work the same and hold the cranks on similarly, but the nutted spindles are a bit heavier.

Note that installing one of these spindles backwards will sometimes solve difficult chainline issues.

These are getting pretty scarce, we have run out of most sizes, and they are no longer in production. We do from time to time find NOS (New, Old Stock) parts so we might someday get new supplies of the discontinued sizes. Please do not contact us to ask about items marked "N/A".

• "3" series spindles normally fit 68 mm ISO/British/French bottom brackets
• "5" series (N/A) spindles normally fit 70 mm Italian bottom brackets, also 68 mm French with thin cups

Grade 25 1/4" Balls bag of 25

Virtually all traditional bottom brackets use 11 1/4" balls on each side. These are the highest quality, grade 25. Many shops use the cheaper grade 100 or even grade 300, but we feel that at this price anybody can afford the best.

Using indivual loose balls is gives better results than balls in retainers, so we don't carry retainers for this application. The primary advantage of using retainers is slightly faster assembly at the factory, and also the opportunity to use fewer balls.

The 1/4" size also fits most rear hubs, 9 per side, so you might want to stock up.
