The Yucatan has no open rivers. All of the fresh water comes from underground aquifers. In some places, sinkholes called "cenotes" open access to these aquifers.This very large cenote at Chichen Itza is about 80 feet from the water to the edge. It was used for human sacrifices by the Mayas in ancient times.
