Pawls at the inside of the sun gears engaged prongs which extend along the axle from the shifter assembly. Shimano Nexus 7 and 8-speed hubs use a similar arrangement, only pawls are blocked by a rotating sleeve around the axle. The Sachs prongs can rotate to three different positions, to engage a pawl in either direction or not engage it.
