April 3, 2011 | Blog is up -- this is the last entry hereannouncements of updates and new items on the site have moved over to the blog. One of the first posts on the blog is John's list of changes since the last one recorded on this page. Harriet has been continuing to reformat pages and has a description of that work on the blog too. |
---|---|
December 6, 2010 | Derailer AdjustmentJohn has revised and updated the article about derailer adjustment. |
December 6, 2010 | Singlespeeds and fixed gearsJohn has revised and updated the articles about singlespeeds and fixed gears. |
December 1, 2010 | Stuck SeatpostsJohn has revised the article on stuck seatposts to include a suggestion from a reader, to use dry ice to chill the seatpost and free it from the frame. John has added several suggestions of his own. |
November 27, 2010 | SRAM/Sachs Internal-Gear hubsJohn has completed an article about Sachs/SRAM internal-gear hubs, with links to other resources, also another article highlighting the Elan 12-speed, probably the heaviest internal-gear hub ever made, and a photo album about the Elan. |
November 25, 2010 | Gear calculatorsJohn has updated the gear calculators to include the Shimano 11-speed and special Brompton wide-ratio 3-speed; also, reorganized the calculators so both allow multiple sprockets and the primary one omits antique internal-gear hubs. |
November 15, 2010 | Shimano Cassettes CompletedThere are still some bells and whistles to add, but updates are substantially complete, with new pages about 7-speed, 8-speed, 9-speed and 10-speed Shimano and Shimano-compatible cassettes, listing available models and sprocket combinations from Shimano, IRD, Miche, SRAM and SunRace. Following in Sheldon's tire tracks, John has signed off on these pages with new Frenchy nicknames for himself. A page about Campagnolo cassettes will follow. |
October 18, 2010 | CassettesJohn is at work updating Sheldon's classic article about cassettes and has created new, comprehensive lists of 8 and 9-speed cassettes from several manufacturers. 7 and 10-speed cassettes will follow. |
September 13, 2010 | Rim BrakesJohn has gathered information from Sheldon's files on cantilever brakes and added new material to create a new lead article on rim brakes and an article about caliper brakes. John also has revised all of the articles about cantilever brakes, including some that were only placeholders. |
August 15 , 2010 | CyclecomputersHarriet has done some work on reformatting the cyclocomputer calibration files. John has added material on roll-out tests, cyclocomputer math and use of the Global Positioning System. |
July 31, 2010 | Tool tipsJohn has reviewed, revised and expanded these articles about tools and repair procedures, which Sheldon culled from his early writings. |
July 28, 2010 | Page templates and style sheetsHarriet has created page templates and style sheets for the conversion to XHTML. Noticeable changes will include regularizing of list formats, and control over text column width. See this page, for example. |
June 14, 2010 | Sturmey-Archer pages updatedSheldon was a serious aficionado of old Sturmey-Archer hubs, but his coverage of the newer ones was spotty. John has updated the Sturmey-Archer section of the site to cover all of the new Sturmey-Archer internal-gear hubs, with links to technical information from numerous sources. |
May 30, 2010 | Sturmey-Archer SW hubJohn has fixed broken links, cleaned up formatting and done some minor text editing on this superb article by Brian Hayes about Sturmey Archer's unsuccessful design which attempted to replace the classic AW three-speed -- and how actually to make the SW hub work reliably if you care to take the trouble. |
May 28, 2010 | Continuing work on the siteHarriet is still fixing HTML syntax and upgrading to XHTM -- also adding Google analytics, last-updated scripts, and changing email addresses to links to our feedback/questions page. |
May 25, 2010 | Substantial additions to internal-gears.htmlI am reconfiguring this page to live up to its name, which identifies it as the introduction to all of the material on the site about internal-gear hubs. I have now greatly expanded the material on sprocket choice, to describe the best choice of gear range for hubs depending on the number of speeds -- also including information on hybrid gearing. Not all of the pages to which this one needs to link are updated or even exist yet, but work proceeds. I'll first address the Shimano hubs, then Sturmey-Archer and SRAM. The pages on the Shimano 3-speed and 7-speed hubs are now substantially complete -- John |
May 16, 2010 | At work on internal-gear pagesThis section of the site is due for a major upgrade and reorganization. Sheldon' root page on internal-gear hubs only covered ones with 7 speeds or more -- and there have been new hubs since his last update. Already done: some updates to the root page, a major update of the Sturmey-Archer page to include hubs currently in production (already out of date according to the 2010 catalog!), and a revision of the page on Shimano three-speed hubs to cover the Shimano Nexus three-speed. My goal is to make sheldonbrown.com a central reference for information on internal-gear hubs, information which is currently strewn around manufacturers' sites and rather hard to find -- John. |
May 12, 2010 | Continuing work on the siteHarriet is fixing HTML syntax and upgrading to XHTML. |
May 11, 2010 | Obsolete glossary pages fixedWhen Sheldon split up glossary pages as they grew longer, he kept the older versions online to avoid breaking links to them. But by now, many entries on the current pages have been revised from those on the older pages, and there are many new entries as well. A person surfing from another site to an entry on an older page, then browsing up or down, would never be aware of the new entries. John has stripped down the obsolete pages so they only direct people to the current pages. It's a bit of a "Gordian knot" solution but it avoids maintaining multiple sets of pages, now and forever! |
May 6, 2010 | Wheelbuilding article substantially expandedJohn has added information on deep-section rims and on improvised tools so the DIY wheelbuilder can do without a truing stand and dish stick. John also added bits of useful information here and there and several photos. Harriet has checked for broken links, and now all the links work. |
May 4, 2010 | Teaching kids to ride article revisedMore information on scooters and on tandeming and on early teaching of traffic skills; photos of kid on tiny trike and on scooter. |
May 3, 2010 | Glossary checked out A to ZBroken links fixed; a few new entries added; empty entries filled out; spell-checked, HTML-checked, Google ads inserted. Next task with the glossary is to check all the links on the site that point to it. |
May 1 , 2010 | Continuing work on the siteHarriet is fixing broken links in hundreds of files, and posting Google ads. John is working his way through the Glossary, updating information. |
April 27, 2010 | Daemon builds a bicycleCBC Radio producer Daemon Fairless embraces his DIY side, and discovers a surprising connection along the way. Just scroll down to "Daemon Builds a Bicycle." |
April 1, 2010 | The Sheldon Brown Bicycle Revival Concours d' ÉléganceNOW it's your turn to turn the wrench! |
