George Emlen is a conductor, organist, composer and music educator. He has
directed choral ensembles for more than 25 years in churches, schools and
theatrical productions. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the New England Conservatory of Music, he studied choral conducting with Lorna Cooke de Varon and earned his Master of Music degree. He conducted two Maine choruses: the Acadia Choral Society, which he founded in 1979, and the Oratorio Chorale. He conducted the Mount Desert (Maine) Summer Chorale for 18 seasons. Mr. Emlen is the composer and arranged of several published choral works. Mr. Emlen taught and directed choruses at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA, for four years, and was music director at the Putney School in Vermont for eight years. He has also taught at the College of the Atlantic and the University of Maine at Machias. |
He currently serves on the graduate
faculty of Lesley University in Cambridge as a professor of music in the
Creative Arts in Learning program and, as such, travels throughout the U.S.
teaching music courses to classroom teachers. Mr. Emlen has been the music director of Revels, Inc., since 1984. For every Cambridge Revels production he is responsible for selecting and training the adult and children's choruses, for researching, selecting and arranging the music heard in the show, and for working with instrumentalists. He also oversees the production of Revels recordings, and he edits and engraves all of Revelsā published musical materials, including choral octavos and songbooks. In addition, Mr. Emlen works with the 11 other Revels cities nationwide to help develop their annual productions, and he leads Revels workshops for teachers. |
