Sheldon Brown's Whale Photographs

The company my wife works at part time sponsored a whale watching trip to Stellwagen Bank, off the mouth of Massachusetts Bay, August 29, 1999.
I brought along an old camera and some long lenses. Here's what we saw:

A humpback waving to the tourists, or maybe just showing off for its mate.

One dives, while the other spouts.

Technical Data:

These photos were made with Kodak Max 800 color print film in an old, purely mechanical Nikon F (I chose to bring this body rather than one of my more modern ones, because I was concerned with the risk of salt spray.)

Since I was working in daylight, I didn't need a light meter.

I used two lenses:

  • Vivitar Series 1 200 mm f3, mostly shooting at f 12.5, 1/000 (I think only the finback image was made with this one.)

  • Toyo 300 mm f5.6 mirror lens, also at 1/1000
