Remembering Sheldon

Richard reading to Sheldon
Big brother Richard reading to Sheldon, around 1949

Gingerbread boy bookSheldon Brown would have been 77 years old today. We miss him very much.
In this picture his big brother Richard is reading to him. And at the right is the cover of the book Richard was reading.

“Run, run
As fast as you can,
You can’t catch me,
I’m the gingerbread man.”

Sheldonbrown.com has compiled links to more cyclecomputer and bicycle GPS manuals, old and new, than you will find anywhere else on the Internet. We have once again added information on new models and re-linked when a brand has discontinued support, left the cyclecomputer business (Blackburn, Cannondale, Pro, Topeak…), or gone out of business entirely (Avocet, Vetta…). And … if you have a manual which is not in our database, please feel free to scan it for us , or send it to us!

Cyclecomputer and GPS database update

Our cyclecomputer and GPS database is undergoing a major review. We’re not all done yet but we have fixed a number of bad links where manufacturers dropped support — thanks to the Internet Archive and our backup copies. And then there are the new models…many of them. We thought that cyclecomputers were passé, what with the advent of GPS, but this is still a strong product category. We found a number of new brand names as well.

Cyclecomputer database updated

We looked high and low to add to our listing of cyclecomputer and bicycle-GPS owner’s manuals. It’s the most complete one you’ll find. We’ve been downloading manuals too so we can still make them available when they are deleted from manufacturer’s Web sites (hello, Vetta…).

Cyclecomputer math: how accurate?

We tested three cyclecomputers against one another. Our experiment reveals a lot about their inner workings. Differences in some of their readings were large enough to matter. Read about this in our new article.

Remembering Sheldon

“The bicycle on the cover was produced on the Management Graphics Table Top Slidemaking System at Crimson Camera Technical Sales in Boston.  A bicycle enthusiast created the image using the tablet menu and cursor tracker.  The bicycle is made up of 99 vectors, 20 circles, and 5 ellipses.  This simple graphic was created to illustrate to customers what 4000-line resolution looks like.”

The “bicycle enthusiast” was Sheldon Brown who worked for a short time at Crimson Camera.  Sheldon died eight years ago today.

Cyclecomputer and GPS accuracy

New page about the history of distance and speed measurement on bicycles, and the limitations of accuracy in measurement. Did you know that GPS readings wander, so you can rack up some distance even if you are standing still?

Raw GPS readings don't quite follow the road.

Cyclecomputer database

Our pages of cyclecomputer instructions have now been brought completely up to date, with links to user manuals for almost every make and model, including GPS. These pages are a unique resource.
