Updates to our main page on Sachs and SRAM hubs , and our page on the G8 and G9 hubs. We have located additional technical information from SRAM, and wehave fixed a number of Web links that went bad.

Sturmey-Archer Pages Updated

Major update to the Sturmey-Archer pages:

* fixed links which S-A broke by redoing its Web site (that’s everything about current hubs).

* updated the list of hubs.

* Added new technical information.

Our cribsheet of hub model names and descriptions is a good place to start.

NEW – Crib sheet of internal-gear hub shifter cable pull measurements

The main thing this shows is that there is very little compatibility, though there is *some* — mostly among three-speeds, though not always among them either. I thank Alex Wetmore and Jeff Bertolet for help with this page.

More indicator spindles

David Prosser of Sturmey Archer has sent information about a couple of Sturmey-Archer indicator spindles (the chain-pull assembly which shifts the hub). It is now on our indicator spindle page. Thanks David!

SRAM G8 Hub

New article about the SRAM G8 8-speed internal hub gear g8-internals— all you need to know to install this hub: specifications, gear ratios,  parts compatibility and availability, how the mechanism works.  As far as we know, this is the one place on the Web where you can find all this information. And if you happen to read German, we have an absolutely terrible pun for you too. Achtung, indeed!

Additions to Nexus/Alfine 8-speed article

John has added information to the article about Shimano Nexus and Alfine 8-speed internally-geared hubs, describing common failure modes and how to forestall failure; how to determine whether a hub might need service; and also normal noises and “clunks” which these hubs make, to avoid unnecessary alarm.
