"Road Triple" 130/74 mm Crank Sets

The manufacturers think you're not smart enough to avoid using the small chainring with the smaller rear sprockets. If they're wrong about you, you can get a serious climbing gear by substituting a smaller "granny" ring.

Since the middle and outer rings are ramped and pinned to improve shifting, you're probably better off leaving the stock ones in place, but there are no ramps or pins on the small ring, since you never shift up onto it.

24, 26 or 28 tooth 74 mm chainrings $19.95 and up

"7-speed"/"8-speed"/"9-speed"/"10-speed"

The marketeers would like you to think that you need to match your chainrings to the number of rear sprockets on your bike, but this is much less important than some people think.

In general, the cranksets shown here will work with "7-speed"/"8-speed"/"9-speed"/"10-speed" chains.

Running a wider chain than the chainrings are spec'ed for may result in slight rubbing and noise if you carelessly cross-chain from the small chainring to one of the outer rear sprockets.

Running a narrower chain on an older crankset designed for wider chain may occasionally result in the chain briefly "skating" over the teeth of a smaller chainring when downshifting.

The manufacturers think you're not smart enough to avoid using the small chainring with the smaller rear sprockets. If they're wrong about you, you can get a serious climbing gear by substituting a smaller "granny" ring.

Since the 42 and 52 rings are ramped and pinned to improve shifting, you're probably better off leaving the stock ones in place, but there are no ramps or pins on the small ring, since you never shift up onto it.
