Internal gear hubs have been around for over a century. Initially they were 3-speed models.
Later 4-, 5-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 12- even 14-speeds came along.
The new NuVinci hub from Fallbrook Technologies goes farther yet, it is a continuously-variable hub, with an infinite number of "gears!"
Using a novel system of rotating spheres instead of toothed, fixed-ratio gears, the NuVinci hub permits you to fine tune your gain ratio steplessly, giving you exactly the gain ratio you prefer for any conditions, within its range.
Here's a YouTube video showing how it works:
Fitting Requirements/Specifications
- Fits frames with 135 mm spacing (most "mountain" and "hybrid" frames, many newer touring frames. Older frames can often be spread to fit.
- Requires dropouts with derailer hanger tab. (This hub uses the derailer hanger as an anti-rotation fitting to keep the axle from rotating.)
- Spring-loaded chain tensioner or eccentric bottom bracket required to regulate chain tension.
- With a spring loaded tensioner, may be combined with a front derailer and multiple chainrings for increased gear range.
- Single speed freewheel not included.
- 4,100 grams.
Twist Shifters and Drop Handlebars.
The Fallbrook NuVinci hub works only with shifters made for it.These shifters are designed to fit straight handlebars with a 7/8" (22.2 mm diameter.) This includes basically all upright or "mountain bike" type handlebars, but does not include drop bars as used on most touring bikes.
There are several ways to get around this limitation however. Probably the best is the HubBub adaptor mount:

Planetary Gears Are Back!
Did You Ever Have A Three-Speed?
Do you remember how easily it shifted, even when you were stopped for a traffic light?Do you remember how trouble-free it was?
Do you remember how the chain never fell off?
Do you remember how weather-proof the gear system was?
Do you remember how comfortable it was?
But...
You also probably remember the narrow range of gears, and the big jumps in between. You probably remember the gap between gears, where your feet would spin freely, with no result.
You probably also remember how heavy your old "all steel" bicycle was,
and how badly the brakes worked in the rain...
The Good Without The Bad!
The NuVinci continuously-variable hub combines the best features of your old 3 speed, and eliminates the worst, thanks to modern materials and technology.

We will re-use your old hubs if you wish, but will not use used spokes nor rims.
- $40 each for wheels with 36 or fewer spokes.
- $45 for 40 spoke wheels.
- $50 for 48 spoke wheels.
- $10 for cutting out and prepping a used hub.
- Butted spokes (DT or Wheelsmith) $1.00 each.
If you bring in existing wheels to be rebuilt, add $10 per wheel for cutting the old spokes, cleaning and prepping your hub.
