It’s been five years…

February 4, 2013 marks the 5th anniversary of the passing of Sheldon Brown, founder of sheldonbrown.com and still the author of most material on the site.

As a friend of Sheldon’s once said, “After they made him, they threw away the mold.” He was unique in his knowledge of bicycles, his ability to put that information clearly into writing, his willingness to share, and his sense of humor.

We mourn his loss, and miss him.

We continue to do our best to expand and update the site, though we regret that we can never match his style!

Five Ways to Produce a Picture in Picture in Avid Studio Ultimate

Sheldon’s photography and videography tradition continues! The Windows video editing application Avid Studio Ultimate has five different modules which can produce a picture-in-picture effect. Each offers somewhat different features, and it is important to know them all so as not to be stuck using one which is less convenient for your purposes. This new article offers a table with a detailed feature-by-feature comparison.

Sutherland’s Handbook of Coaster Brake and Internally-Geared Hubs

Sutherland’s handbook of Coaster Brake and Internally-Geared Hubs is now online on this site. Many thanks to Howard Sutherland for permission to post this! The site now covers just about any of these hubs which you might ever have to work on.

Expanded coaster-brake coverage

Coverage of coaster brakes on sheldonbrown.com has been greatly expanded, now including all the most common models, old and new.

Video editor review

Continuing work to provide useful information to bicyclists using helmet cameras (and others editing video on home computers), John has written an extended review of Avid Studio and Pinnacle Studio video editing applications. This review contains much useful information on getting up the learning curve in Avid Studio, which is very powerful but has some serious gaps in the Help and user manual.

A question remains: how tight to tighten the bolts. They press the frame tabs against the barrel of the hinge. Probably not too, too tight.
